To kick things off we have some news fresh from UK black metal band Formicarius, it has today been confirmed that their track Lake Of The Dead will be featured on Music For Nations Speed Kills VII compilation. Decades ago Music For Nations unleashed musical extremities upon the world via the Speed Kills compilations, bringing us the likes of Slayer, Metallica, Bathory and Venom along with plenty of others. Music For Nations returns under Sony Music Entertainment and will revive this series with the seventh installment which is set to be with us on December 2nd, and if history tells us anything it should be something pretty special.
It will serve to shine a spotlight on the UK's strengthening metal scene which is host to some exceptional talent right now, and the compilation will also feature up and coming UK extreme metal bands The King Is Blind and Voices along with veterans Akercocke and Acid Reign.
Definitely one to watch out for.
If you want to hear more from Formicarius you can also download their three track release from Bandcamp via the link below, featuring the songs Lake Of The Dead, Under Darkness and a cover of Emperor's Cosmic Keys To My Creation And Times.

Rising From The Ashes - The Black Phoenix Blog Returns!
Well, it's certainly been a while. This blog was last active over a year ago and resurrecting it is something I've been thinking about for some time, but for one reason or another it's not something I've gotten round to doing until now. However, like any good Phoenix, we are reborn from fire and as of now this blog is once again live!
The plan is to keep it regularly updated with content and various bits and bobs which we think will be of interest. I'll try not to replicate too much information that's already on the forum though, so still check in on the main BPR forums as well. In particular reviews and interviews will still be kept on the forum and not replicated here, however you'll see at the top of the page a new section "This Month On BPR" which will list the latest bands we've interviewed or reviewed albums by so you can at least see what's happening on the forum.
Other features I plan include things such as band and scene related news, featured bands and albums, some more in depth articles and writings on various aspects of the metal scene, an album of the month feature from myself and our admin Ian and anything else that might spring to mind as we go along.
So yes, the blog is back in business, watch this space!

Name your price spotlight - Blacksoul Seraphim
Featuring members of Sorrowseed, Blacksoul Seraphim play a style of atmospheric doom metal reminiscent of bands such as Yearning, they're a fairly recent discovery but having recently released their second full length album on Bandcamp as a free / name your price download they're certainly worthy of attention if you're into mournful and atmospheric gothic doom. If this sort of thing floats your boat check this album out.

Hydra release lyric video
In preperation for their upcoming album 'Malachite Skies' German symphonic metal band have made a lyric video for the song 'CCC (Swath of Destruction)', featuring Liv Kristine. The album will be available later this month, but this will hopefully whet your appetite.
Name your price spotlight - Across Tundras
Exactly what is says on the tin, the "name your price" spotlight is something I'll feature on here from time to time, and the aim is to draw awareness to some good music on Bandcamp that you can either pay what you want for or get for free. It seems to be a pricing model adopted by quite a few bands and labels in an attempt to get their music to a wider audience, so with this in mind we figured it's good to help them achieve this while introducing you to some good music which won't cost you to hear it, although of course should you like what you hear and choose to donate I'm sure they'd appreciate it :-)
Starting off this feature then, I'll introduce you to Across Tundras, a band blending psychedelic style desert rock, doom, and a healthy dose of Americana. The most common sort of description I see of this band is Neurosis meets Neil Young, and this I think sums them up pretty well. Certainly unique, decent stuff, the link below will take you to their Bandcamp page where they have a lot of releases, including some of T.G. Olson's solo work, and most of it is available for whatever you wish to pay
